Getting Jira Access

  • If you need access to Jira, contact Catherine Armstrong or Scott Worthington. They are the Jira / Confluence admins for the ITS Web Team.

  • If you already have access to Jira, but you need access to a specific project, reach out to the project owner.

Viewing a Jira Project

The ITS Web Team uses the following Jira projects to track work: work. You may be assigned tickets in one or more projects. It is recommended that you favorite or bookmark the projects you frequently work in.

Creating a Jira Ticket

  • Click the plus button in the upper left navigation to add a new ticket.

Info

You can also create tickets from the Roadmap or Backlog pages of a project. Creating a ticket from the Roadmap page is the easiest way to assign the ticket to an Epic. Creating a ticket from the Backlog page is the easiest way to move the ticket into a Sprint.

  • Complete the following fields in the ticket. * represents required fields.

    • *Select the appropriate Project from the drop-down menu (see options above).

    • *Select the appropriate Issue type from the drop-down menu.

      • Epic - high-level roadmap items taking at least two sprints to complete.

      • Task - develop something new.

      • Bug - fix an issue with something that has already been developed.

    • *Write a short Summary of the issue, starting with a verb.

    • *Under the Description, answer the following:

      • What triggered the request?

      • What does “done” look like? In other words, what is the desired outcome.

      • Is there any other information the team should know?

    • Update the Assignee to the appropriate team member. If unknown, leave blank.

    • Update the Review(s) / Tester(s) with the names of the people who will review / test the ticket before marking it Done.

    • Add the appropriate Labels. It is important that you type the label exactly as defined so that the team can use the labels for filtering. See the list of labels.

    • Add a Story point estimate if known.

    • Update the Priority. The default priority for all tickets is Medium. For tickets with a priority of Highest or High, please explain the urgency in the Description field.

    • Add a Due date only if there is a hard external deadline or a task must be completed on a specific date.

  • Click Create.

  • Next, add the task to an Epic. Click the three dots next to the ticket you create and select Add parent. Select the appropriate Epic from the drop-down list. If the ticket is not part of an upcoming Roadmap item, select District Web Ops or College Web Ops - depending on the project - to indicate that it is part of ongoing operations work.

Updating a Jira Ticket

  • Update any ticket assigned to you with the latest Status, Comments, and Development branch as you progress on the ticket throughout the current Sprint.
